Latinos continue to be hard hit by HIV, bearing a disproportionate burden of the epidemic in the United States. While HIV poses a serious health threat to all Latinos, different Latino communities are impacted in different ways. In conjunction with National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, CDC releases new data reinforcing that the epidemic among Latinos is as diverse as the community itself here in the United States. The new analysis finds significant regional differences in the HIV epidemic among Latinos.
In the Northeast, Latinos have the highest diagnoses rates in the nation and are more likely to be infected through injection drug use than those in other regions. Most HIV-positive Latinos in this region are also born in Puerto Rico. Latinos in the South have the highest number of new diagnoses and are more likely to be infected through male-to-male sexual contact than Latinos in the Northeast. HIV-positive Latinos in the South are also more likely to be born in Central America and Mexico. Please see Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) for the full article.
National Latino AIDS Awareness Day is a time to reflect on the many thousands of Latino lives affected and lost to HIV and AIDS. NLAAD is also an opportunity to recognize and leverage the strengths of diverse Latino communities in the fight against HIV.
