NIH Issues Supplemental Record of Decision for Boston University National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories

NIH Blue Ribbon Panel on the National Emerging Infectious Disease Lab at BUMC

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued a supplemental record of decision (ROD) reaffirming its earlier decision to partially fund the construction of the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL), a state-of-the-art National Biocontainment Laboratory at the Boston University Medical Campus in Boston, Massachusetts. The supplemental ROD follows completion of a Final Supplementary Risk Assessment for the NEIDL and thorough consideration of public comments on both the draft and final risk assessments. The supplemental ROD reaffirms that the NEIDL, in its current location of the BioSquare Research Park, poses minimal risk to the community surrounding the facility and that research at high and maximum containment levels can be conducted there safely. The supplemental ROD reaffirms the prior ROD published on February 2, 2006.
The complete supplemental ROD is available at http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2013-01-02/pdf/2012-31509.pdf.
The final Supplementary Risk Assessment for the NEIDL is available here http://nihblueribbonpanel-bumc-neidl.od.nih.gov/docs/2012/RA_BU_NEIDL_final_Jul2012.pdf (pdf 43 MB).
