February is Black History MonthAs NDEP celebrates Black History Month, we remind partners that African Americans are disproportionately affected by type 2 diabetes. The NDEP has resources to help African Americans in your community take steps to prevent or manage type 2 diabetes.
Partners Shine in NDEP’s Partner SpotlightNDEP’s February Spotlight is on NDEP Partner, Migrant Health Promotion. Learn how this partner used NDEP resources to implement a “Promotora Community Program” to improve the health of farmworkers and rural communities affected by diabetes.
Dr. Philip Rodgers Shares How Pharmacists Can Use NDEP Resources to Help Patients with DiabetesPhilip T. Rodgers, PharmD, BCPS, FCCP recently published an article titled “Helping Patients with Diabetes: Resources from the National Diabetes Education Program” in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association, which explains how pharmacists can use NDEP resources to counsel patients with diabetes. Dr. Rodgers is a member of NDEP’s Strategic Directions Group and Pharmacists, Podiatrists, Optometrists and Dentists Stakeholder Group.
Diabetes Alert Day: Coming SoonAmerican Diabetes Association Alert Day® (March 26, 2013) is just around the corner! On Diabetes Alert Day and throughout the month of March, the NDEP will support the American Diabetes Association by encouraging people to find out if they are at risk for type 2 diabetes by taking the Diabetes Risk Test and talking to their family about their family history of diabetes. NKDEP, Health, and Faith Partners Collaborate for National Kidney Sundays EventThe National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP) is partnering with the American Diabetes Association and Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. to host the second nationwide Kidney Sundays event on March 3, 2013. Learn how you can get involved in an activity that will raise awareness about the connection between diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney disease.
Flu Season is in High Gear
People with diabetes have a higher risk of developing complications from the flu. Encourage people in your community–especially those living with diabetes–to get a flu shot as soon as possible. Also, learn about the role of antiviral medications in people with diabetes.
