Today in CDC’s Vital Signs, we report on what could be the beginning of the end of antibiotics. Our arsenal of existing antibiotics is literally being overpowered by lethal germs called carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). When someone gets a serious (bloodstream) infection from CRE, we have very few or no antibiotics to cure the problem. Up to half of these patients will die.

On today’s Safe Healthcare Blog, CDC's Dr. Arjun Srinivasan, Associate Director for Healthcare-Associated Infection Prevention Programs in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, discusses the critical situation that now faces patients, healthcare providers and our entire medical system.

We invite you to read more and join the conversation on the rise of these deadly, resistant germs, at http://blogs.cdc.gov/safehealthcare/.
