CDC has tracked one type of CRE from a single healthcare facility in 2001 to health-care facilities in at least 42 states. In some places, these bacteria are now encountered routinely and pose a challenge to clinicians. CDC recommends that states and healthcare facilities understand the prevalence of CRE in their region and be proactive in CRE prevention efforts. Even areas not yet affected by CRE can take proactive measures.

To read CDC’s Vital Signs report about CRE and to learn what patients, clinicians, facilities and state health departments can do to prevent the spread of CRE, go to CDC’s CRE website.
