NCHHSTP Newsroom from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Today, in advance of World TB Day, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released preliminary 2012 data from the CDC National TB Surveillance System. Data indicate a total of 9,951 TB cases were reported in the United States in 2012, representing a 6.1 percent decline in the rate from 2011 (to 3.2 cases per 100,000 population). Despite this progress, TB continues to disproportionately affect some communities, including both racial/ethnic minorities and foreign-born individuals. In addition, drug-resistant TB – which is more difficult and costly to treat, and more often fatal – remains a concern.
While TB prevention and control efforts have averted more than 200,000 TB cases in the U.S. over the past 20 years, we must remain vigilant against this serious disease. For more information, please see our snapshot fact sheet on TB in the U.S. in 2012, or visit our newsroom
