CDC Viral Hepatitis Updates: Hepatitis C in the U.S., Twitter Chat on May 30th

CDC Viral Hepatitis Updates: Hepatitis C in the U.S., Twitter Chat on May 30th

Viral Hepatitis Updates from CDC May is Hepatitis Awareness Month
NEJM: Hepatitis C in the United States

This big picture suggests that there are many points of intervention to improve the identification and care of patients with HCV and to mitigate the increase in hospitalizations and deaths resulting from HCV infection. For example, the CDC recently recommended a one-time test for everyone born between 1945 and 1965. Clearly, there is also a need to do a better job of getting HCV-infected persons who know their HCV status into care, evaluated, and, as appropriate, treated.

MMWR: Notes from the Field: Transmission of HBV Among Assisted-Living–Facility Residents On June 29, 2012, the Rappahannock Area Health District in northwestern Virginia received a report of an acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in an elderly resident of an assisted-living facility (ALF). The resident reported no risk factors for HBV infection except assisted monitoring of blood glucose (AMBG), which has been implicated in the transmission of HBV in ALFs and other long-term–care facilities .

HIV and Hepatitis Fact Sheet

People with HIV infection are disproportionally affected by viral hepatitis. About 80% of people with HIV who inject drugs also have hepatitis C virus (HCV). HIV coinfection more than triples the risk for liver disease, liver failure, and liver-related death from HCV.
