CDC Viral Hepatitis Updates – USPSTF Recommendations on Screening for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Infection

Viral Hepatitis Updates from CDC
U.S. Preventive Services Task Force - Screening for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Infection
The USPSTF recommends screening for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in persons at high risk for infection. The USPSTF also recommends offering one-time screening for HCV infection to adults born between 1945 and 1965. Grade: B Recommendation.

PHS Guideline for Reducing Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Hepatitis B Virus, and Hepatitis C Virus Transmission Through Organ Transplantation
This guideline supersedes the 1994 U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) Guidelines for Preventing Transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus through Transplantation of Human Tissue and Organs.
The most significant changes are:
  • Expanding the guideline to include hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV);
  • Using factors known to be associated with an increased likelihood of recent HIV, HBV, or HCV infection to identify potential donors who may be at increased risk for transmitting infection; and
  • Limiting the focus to organs and blood vessel conduits recovered for organ transplantation because the Food and Drug Administration implemented more comprehensive regulations for human cell and tissue products.
The recommendations relate to adult and pediatric donors who are living or deceased, as well as transplant candidates and recipients.http://www.publichealthreports.org/issueopen.cfm?articleID=2975
