NCHHSTP Newsroom: National HIV Testing Day is June 27

NCHHSTP Newsroom from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This Thursday, June 27, is National HIV Testing Day – a day that not only serves as a reminder that HIV remains a serious health problem in the United States, but also as an opportunity for individuals to take action by getting tested for HIV.
Of the 1.1 million people living with HIV in the United States, CDC estimates that nearly one in five are unaware of their infections (18 percent). This is particularly concerning because almost half of new infections are transmitted by people who do not know they are infected.
Testing is the only way to identify the more than 200,000 Americans who do not know they are infected and who urgently need HIV care and prevention services.
For more information about the importance of HIV testing, please see quotes from CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention Director, Dr. Jonathan Mermin, our fact sheet on testing, or visit our newsroom.
