Sleep May Worsen ADHD Effects?

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) don't consolidate emotional memories during sleep as well as normal children.
Researchers at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein in Germany studied the sleeping brains of healthy adults, healthy children, and children with ADHD after being shown images, which were meant to elicit emotional responses.  Areas of the brain believed to be associated with the consolidation of emotional memories were found to be the most active in healthy children, followed by healthy adults, then children with ADHD.  It is believed this lack of consolidation could intensify emotional problems during the day in children with ADHD.
