SAMHSA Headlines: Nearly 18 Percent of Pregnant Women Drink Alcohol in Their First Trimester

A new SAMHSA report showed that approximately 18 percent of women in their first trimester of pregnancy used alcohol within the past month. The report also showed 6.6 percent of women in their first trimester engaged in binge drinking.
According to a new SAMHSA report, the rate of past-month nonmedical use of prescription drugs among young adults age 18–25 in 2012 was 5.3 percent—similar to rates in 2010 and 2011, but significantly lower than the rate in 2009 (6.4 percent).
SAMHSA has developed an Opioid Overdose Toolkit to educate first responders, physicians, patients, family members, and community members on ways to prevent opioid overdose, as well as how to use a drug called naloxone to prevent overdose-related deaths.
A new report on the Synar Amendment program—a Federal and state partnership aimed at ending illegal tobacco sales to minors—shows that all the states and the District of Columbia have continued to meet their goals of reducing tobacco sales to underage youth.
