Nerve Blocking to Prevent Eczema Symptoms?

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – A study out of University of California, Berkeley finds a new therapy to treat chronic itch and inflammation caused by eczema.
UC Berkeley neuroscientist, Diana M. Bautista along with graduate students, Lydia Thé and Sarah R. Wilson, found that the sensory nerves in the skin react to chemicals that cause the skin to itch and inflame before anything else. They discovered that by blocking the skin’s itch receptors they can stop patients from scratching and developing worse symptoms.
"By just blocking what is happening in the neurons, you could block the symptoms of chronic itch, including the big immune response leading to asthma and allergy. And you prevent the patient from scratching, which damages skin cells and makes them release more chemicals that cause inflammation and help maintain chronic itch," Wilson was quoted as saying.
A new drug is already in the works and is in Phase 1 clinical trials. Though more research is needed, it will be interesting to see if there is a cure for this uncomfortable disease.
