DME Patients Not Getting Prompt Care

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – A study from The John Hopkins University finds that patients who have diabetic macular edema (DME) are not having eye exams done to check for vision loss.
Dr. Neil Bressler, M.D. and colleagues analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey to investigate the eye care of patients over 40 who have diabetes.
“Our results suggest that many individuals with DME report not receiving prompt diabetes-related or eye-related care, although many of these individuals are at risk of substantial visual loss that could be lessened or eliminated with appropriate care,” the authors were quoted as saying.
Researchers found that about 60 percent of patients reported having and eye exam after they had experienced vision loss.
