- A new treatment for metastatic melanoma: Dr Jeffrey Weber at Moffitt Cancer Center is using a new drug combo with excellent results. In this report I learned that sun exposure in the first three decades provide the greatest risk for melanoma and my first three decades had lots of time in the sun so it renews my vow to see my dermatologist at least once every year.
- A new therapy for obesity: Dr Shelby Sullivan at Washington University in St Louis is conducting a clinical trial to test a very radical weight loss method called “aspiration therapy. ” Read or watch the report for more about it.
- A new ICD that uses a single lead. Dr Antony Chu, Director of Complex Ablation and Arrhythmia Services at the Rhode Island and Miriam Hospital tells us all about it.
Two stories on our website this week focus on the long list of people onorgan transplant lists, many of whom die before they get to an implant. Dr Robert Higgins at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center explained how hard it is to be sick enough to get to the top of the list but not so sick that the transplant’s not going to help you which means they put you back down the list. He says there are only about 10,000 organ donors in the US but there are 120,000 people waiting for organs. Mary Mehegan, RN and VAD Coordinator at St Louis Children’s Hospital, also told us about a new device for kids to still be kids while waiting for a transplant. It’s called HeartWare. Finally, my favorite story this week is “Giving Shannon a Voice of Her Own” so don’t miss it. Dr Tim Bunnell and his team at Nemours/Alfred I DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware are using technology to give children with cerebral palsey a voice that more closely matches their own vocal identity. What a gift!
