Scientists Describe Gut Bacteria that Cause Sepsis in Premature Infants
In a new study funded by several NIH institutes, researchers studying sepsis in premature infants have characterized the gut bacteria associated with this life-threatening bloodstream infection. Their findings, published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, pave the way for new strategies for the early detection and prevention of sepsis.
By comparing bacteria found in the bloodstream of affected infants with those isolated from earlier stool samples, the scientists identified strains of bacteria associated with sepsis.
