Providing Quality Family Planning Services: Recommendations of CDC and the U.S. Office of Population Affairs
This report provides recommendations on how to provide family planning services. Such services include contraceptive services, pregnancy testing and counseling, helping clients achieve pregnancy, basic infertility services, preconception health services, and sexually transmitted disease services.
Core State Preconception Health Indicators - Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2009
This surveillance summary includes data for 39 of 41 indicators: 2009 data for 23 preconception health indicators that were monitored by PRAMS and 16 preconception health indicators that were monitored by BRFSS. Preconception health and women's health can be improved by reducing unintended pregnancies, reducing risky behaviors (e.g., smoking and drinking) among women of reproductive age, and ensuring that chronic conditions are under control.
Women and Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention
Drinking too much alcohol can cause many health problems. There are easy ways health professionals can screen all adults, including pregnant women, and counsel those who drink too much to drink less.

Community-Based Program to Prevent HIV/STD Infection Among Heterosexual Black Women
This report describes successful efforts by SisterLove, Inc., to develop, rigorously evaluate, and demonstrate the efficacy of Healthy Love, a 3-4–hour interactive, educational workshop, to reduce HIV- and sexually transmitted disease-related risk behaviors among heterosexual black women.
UPDATED STD Curriculum - Ready-To-Use Modules - Herpes Simplex Virus
The target audience for these modules is faculty in clinical education programs, including those programs that train advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and physicians. Each module contains a slide presentation, an instructor's guide, a case study, and test questions.
Minority Health and HPV
Women of color often are diagnosed with cervical cancer at a later stage than white women. Many of the HPV infections that cause these cancers could be prevented if young females and males received the HPV vaccine.
Breast Cancer in Young Women
Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women. About 11% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age.
Births to Teens Aged 15-17 Years - United States, 1991–2012
This report documents sharp declines in the birth rates for teens aged 15–17 years during 1991–2012. Approximately one in four births to a teen aged 15–19 years in 2012 was to a teen aged 15–17 years.
Vital Signs: Preventing Pregnancies in Younger Teens
More than 86,000 teens ages 15 to 17 gave birth in 2012. Giving birth during the teen years has been linked with increased medical risks and emotional, social, and financial costs to the mother and her children. Becoming a teen mom affects whether the mother finishes high school, goes to college, and the type of job she will get, especially for younger teens ages 15 to 17.
Notes from the Field: Multistate Outbreak of Listeriosis Linked to Soft-Ripened Cheese — United States, 2013
Four of the five patients were female, including one who was pregnant at the time of infection. All five were hospitalized. One death and one miscarriage were reported. Persons at greater risk for listeriosis, including older adults, pregnant women, and those with immunocompromising conditions, should be aware that certain soft cheeses made with unpasteurized milk, or made under unsanitary conditions, regardless of whether the milk was pasteurized, have been shown to cause severe illness.
Unique Issues for Women with Epilepsy
Women with epilepsy can experience difficulties arising from hormonal changes during their reproductive cycle that sometimes can affect the tendency to have seizures. Pregnancy also brings some special considerations for women with epilepsy.

Prescription Drug Overdose: Boost for State Prevention [CDC-RFA-CE14-1404]
The purpose of this funding is to advance and evaluate comprehensive state-level interventions for preventing prescription drug misuse, abuse, and overdose. Interventions of interest address patient and prescriber behaviors that drive the prescription drug overdose epidemic, particularly the misuse and inappropriate prescribing of opioid pain relievers. Closing Date: Jun 4, 2014.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Practice and Implementation Centers [CDC-RFA-DD14-1402]
The purpose of this program announcement is to expand previous efforts from FASD training programs and shift the perspective of this work from individual training for practicing health care professionals to one that capitalizes on prevention opportunities and the ability to impact health care practice at the systems level. Closing Date: May 13, 2014.
Improving Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Prevention and Practice through National Partnerships [CDC-RFA-DD14-1403]
This is a new program with an overall goal of strengthening strategic partnerships with key national medical societies, professional organizations and constituent groups. Closing Date: May 13, 2014.
Evaluation of Health Promotion and Prevention Programs for Blood Disorders [CDC-RFA-DD14-1405]
The purpose of this FOA is to develop, sustain, and evaluate non-research activities to promote the health, wellness and the adoption of healthy behaviors aimed at reducing or preventing complications of blood disorders. Closing Date: May 21, 2014.
