Screen of Existing Drugs Finds Compounds Active
Against MERS Coronavirus
In a search for therapies for the newly emerging viral illness called
Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), NIAID scientists and grantees
screened 290 drugs that are already approved by the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration for use in other illnesses. The investigators found
27 compounds that, in test tubes, showed activity against both MERS
coronavirus and the related SARS virus. Some of the compounds are now
being tested in a mouse model of MERS.
