After the isolation of HCV, implementation of screening of blood products and organs for donation led to a decrease in rates of HCV infection between 1990 and 2009. In spite of these successes, HCV still remains a serious threat, both domestically and abroad. HCV remains the most common chronic blood borne infection in the United States.http://www.cdc.gov/

National Summit to Improve Access to HCV Testing, Treatment, and Cure -June 17th & 18thCDC and the Viral Hepatitis Action Coalition invite you to a webcast of a National Summit to Improve Access to HCV Testing, Treatment, and Cure on Tuesday, June 17th – 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm eastern and Wednesday, June 18th - 8:30 am- 5:00 pm eastern. Recommendations from CDC and U.S. Preventive Services Task Force for HCV testing and the licensure of safe, highly effective therapies that can cure HCV infection in up to 90% of those treated create a unique opportunity for communities to implement strategies that improve the continuum of HCV testing, care and treatment. Experts will explore strategies for linkage to care by increasing capacity of health care providers, leveraging the health system, and effectively reaching key populations.

Uniting to Combat Hepatitis BIn late May, during National Hepatitis Awareness Month, coalition members from all over the country came together for the second Hep B United Summit. Hep B United is a national effort to raise awareness about hepatitis B and liver cancer. Medicare Will Cover Hepatitis C Screening in Primary Care Settings
On June 2, 2014, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced its determination that hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening will be covered by Medicare for adults in primary care. Specifically, the determination stated that CMS will cover HCV screening when ordered by a beneficiary’s primary care physician or practitioner within the context of a primary care setting, and performed by an eligible Medicare provider, for beneficiaries who meet either of the following conditions:
