World Hepatitis Day – July 28th Viral hepatitis is a major global health threat. All types of viral hepatitis can cause inflammation of the liver; however, hepatitis B and C infection can result in a lifelong, chronic infection. Worldwide, more than one million people die each year from viral hepatitis. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that nearly 400 million people have chronic viral hepatitis worldwide.

National African American Hepatitis C Action Day - July 25th July 25th is National African American Hepatitis C Action Day. The day is a commemoration designed to heighten public awareness about the devastating impact of the Hepatitis C epidemic on African American communities. CDC is joining the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc. to help promote the day in an effort to increase Hepatitis C awareness, increase Hepatitis C testing among baby boomers, and increase access to medical care and treatment for individuals infected with the Hepatitis C virus. It now threatens the health of millions more. The discovery of the hepatitis C virus led to effective ways of reducing transmission and, more recently, to highly effective, life-saving treatments. But to truly eliminate hepatitis C in the U.S., these treatments must be used by everyone who needs them. Even as the nation grapples with how to ensure access to these treatments, another major challenge remains -- about half of the nearly three million Americans living with the virus have no idea they are infected.

A new pilot helps battle hepatitis C with health IT and telemedicine
Health IT and telemedicine are important tools to help early diagnosis and treatment of a growing problem in the U.S. – hepatitis C. CDC launched a new pilot program to help use telemedicine to fight HCV, develop new treatment tools, and get them in the hands of providers to try and stem the tide of HCV infections. The pilot program is prompting ONC — in collaboration with the American Medical Association (AMA) — to create new HCV clinical quality measures and clinical decision support tools to help fight this deadly disease.
