Launch of IDF Global Scorecard and Storybook
To mark the UN General Assembly this September, IDF will launch its Global Diabetes Scorecard and Diabetes Storybook through an interactive online campaign involving member associations, key project collaborators, and partners. We will be providing you with tools to help you share Scorecard and Storybook content with your social media network from 8-25 September. We urge you to join us in celebrating this campaign and use it to highlight challenges facing people with diabetes to your national governments.
69th UN General Assembly
The 69th UN General Assembly starts on Sunday 21 September. This year, the focus will be on the final push to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) before they expire at the end of 2015. It will also mark the launch of the formal intergovernmental negotiation process to determine the post-2015 development agenda. The outcome documentof the meeting of the Open Working Group that took place in July 2014 has been submitted to the UN General Assembly “as a proposal” and will be a basis for the discussions.
WHO meetings 2014
WHO Regional Committee meetings (RCMs) 2014 will run from September through to October. The RCMs are important fora for Member States to discuss progress toward reaching targets set by the Millennium Development Goals and to discuss the position of NCDs in the post 2015 framework.   IDF will be represented at RCM by members of the IDF Board and Member Associations.
Nutrition in the spotlight
The Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) will be held in Rome from 19-21 November 2014. Hosted by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the meeting will be the first high-level intergovernmental conference on nutrition since 1992, and will focus on how to address major nutrition challenges over the coming decades. Given the relevance of ICN2 to the work of IDF, we are working to ensure IDF’s involvement during the conference.
FAO and WHO secretariats have prepared a zero draft of the political document for ICN2, to which IDF sent its comments in March. In May, after several discussions of the ICN2 Joint Working Group (JWG), the draft of the Rome Declaration on Nutrition was released. Civil Society was invited to comment on the new document and IDF took part in the consultation providing a submission on the diabetes perspective.
In July IDF sent its comments to the zero draft Framework for Action that will guide the implementation of the Rome Declaration.
Progress for parliamentarians network
The IDF parliamentary network has grown from 55 to 87 members. The group has brought diabetes to the attention of many national governments including Kenya, UK and Australia. Activities of the parliamentarians ranged from health checks to the establishment of a new Parliamentary Group in Malta.
If you have parliamentarians with a special interest in diabetes in your country or you are aware about any other diabetes parliamentary group at the national or regional level, please let us know!
