New research has illuminated the movement and complete atomic structure of the spikes on HIV that the virus uses to bind to the cells it infects. The findings indicate that an HIV vaccine that teaches the immune system to neutralize the virus should be based on a closed configuration of the spike. The findings also give researchers the tools to design and manipulate such a vaccine component.
