2015 OMHHE Sponsored Internship Opportunities

OMHHE sponsors the CDC Undergraduate Public Health Scholars (CUPS)program, consisting of six internship opportunities taking place at four partner institutions, and creating a public health workplace experience to increase student interest in minority health. The program begins with a trip to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to introduce students to public health professionals working at the federal level.

The Summer Public Health Scholars Program is a 10-week summer training program for undergraduates in their junior and senior year and recent baccalaureate degree students. Throughout the summer, participants receive leadership training, orientation to the public health disciplines, and real world work experience. At the conclusion of the program, interns deliver an oral presentation and submit a final paper on a public health challenge or intervention.
Male student holding booksMaternal Child Health Careers / Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement-Undergraduate Program (MCHC/RISE-UP)
at Kennedy Krieger Institute
The MCHC/RISE-UP Program is a 10-week summer public health leadership program designed for undergraduates in their junior and senior year and recent baccalaureate degree students (within 12 months of the MCHC/RISE-UP orientation).. MCHC/RISE-UP is a national consortium of institutions including the Kennedy Krieger Institute, Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, University of Southern California, California State University-LA, and University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine Center for Disabilities. Three tracks are offered: (1) clinical (KKI only), (2) research, and (3) community engagement and advocacy.
Dr. James A. Ferguson, Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program (Ferguson Fellows)
at Kennedy Krieger Institute
The Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship is a 9-week summer program for students currently enrolled full-time in a medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary, or public health graduate program who are interested in participating in infectious diseases and health disparities research. Ferguson Fellows are encouraged and supported to submit their research to national meetings and for publication.
Public Health Leadership & Learning Undergraduate Student Success (PLLUSS) Program
at Kennedy Krieger Institute
The PLLUSS Program is an 8-week summer public health leadership and research program that continues student support for 150 hours during the academic year. The PLUSS Program is for undergraduate sophomore and junior students minoring or majoring in public health with at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4-point scale. Students must complete sufficient course credit hours during the program for a minor in public health. PLLUSS Program students will participate in public health research, education on health disparities and urban health issues, professional development, and community health promotion activities. Students will receive mentorship with the goal of successful acceptance and completion of graduate or professional school in the public health area.

at Morehouse College
Project: IMHOTEP is an 11-week summer program designed for undergraduates in their junior and senior year and recent baccalaureate degree students. Throughout the program, interns participate in a wide variety of seminars, workshops, and other educational initiatives and must complete a required number of community service hours. The interns receive training and support in data analysis and other project requirements. At the conclusion of the program, interns deliver an oral presentation, poster, and submit a written manuscript suitable for publication in a scientific journal.
Future Public Health Leaders Program (FPHLP)

The Future Public Health Leaders Program is a 10-week summer program designed for undergraduates in their junior and senior year and recent baccalaureate degree students. The participants explore public health through seminars, workshops, and engagement in a community-based research project. Throughout the program the experience is guided by mentors from public health disciplines. The participants receive leadership training, orientation to the public health disciplines, and real world work experience.

Collegiate Leaders in Environmental Health (CLEH)
The National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR) in Atlanta, Georgia invites rising collegiate juniors and seniors to apply for this paid 10-week summer internship. Undergraduate students that are passionate about the environment, about health, and about the link between the two will be paired with mentors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to gain experience in the fascinating field of Environmental Public Health. Students will receive a stipend of ~$620 per week to cover living expenses and other basic needs. More

CDC/ the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) Applied Epidemiology Fellowship
The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) are accepting applications for the Applied Epidemiology Fellowship Program, which trains recent graduates in the field of applied epidemiology. During a two-year assignment, participating fellows develop applied epidemiologic skills during a high quality, mentored training experience in order to prepare them for a long-term career at the state or local level. While the program provides rigorous training for its participants, it is also designed with flexibility in order to meet the particular interests of the fellows. The fellowship program is designed for recent master's or doctoral level graduates in epidemiology or a related field who are interested in the practice of public health at the state or local level. More
Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship (APHIF)
The Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship (APHIF) trains recent graduates in the expanding field of applied public health informatics. Participating Fellows will receive one year of on-the-job training at a state or local health agency under the guidance of experienced mentors. The goal of the Fellowship is to provide a high quality training experience and to secure long-term career placement for Fellows at the state or local level. APHIF is supported by the Association of the State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), and the Public Health Informatics Institute (PHII), otherwise known as the SHINE (Strengthening Health Systems through Inter-professional Education) partners. More
