EUROGIN: The oral detection of HPV can suggest genital infection in half of the cases tested by Brazilian researchers EUROGIN: The oral detection of HPV can suggest genital infection RSi Communications 12/02/15 as presented at the EUROGIN International Multidisciplinary Congress The oral detection of HPV suggested genital infection in approximately half of the cases tested at the Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói, Brazil, according to data presented in a poster at EUROGIN, held in February in Seville.  Oral scrapes from healthy mucosa and genital smears of condylomatous lesions were evaluated by molecular methods from 110 samples from oral and genital sites collected from patients attending the university’s STD Clinic. HPV was detected in 85.5% of genital lesions (n=55) and in 43.6% of oral mucosa samples. In 13 of the 55 (23.6%) studied cases, both sites were infected. The agreement among genital and oral types was high: nine cases showed the same infecting types in both mucosa. HPV11 was the most prevalent (n=7), followed by HPV6 (n=2) and HPV45 (n=1). Two cases showed mixed infections by HPV6/11 and one by HPV11/45. There was a markedly higher prevalence of oral infection in men (P=0.004).
