More and more US residents are traveling internationally, often to developing countries, and some travelers come back with more than souvenirs. For example, you may have heard of some US residents getting chikungunya in the Caribbean or measles in the Philippines. The benefits of international travel are many, but travelers should be aware that they risk becoming sick or injured when they travel. By following some simple tips, however, travelers can visit other countries and return with only happy memories.
Get Vaccines and Medicines
Discuss any upcoming travel plans with your primary care provider and ensure that you have an adequate supply of any medicines you take regularly. If you’re planning a trip to a developing country, schedule aconsultation with a travel health professional at least 4–6 weeks before your trip. During the pre-travel consultation, your doctor or nurse will discuss any vaccines or medicines that may be recommended for your destination and talk to you about how to stay safe and healthy when you travel. CDC’s free app TravWell is available to help with vaccine recommendations, a packing list, to-do list, and electronic storage for travel health documents.
