STEADI - Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries

President Obama is scheduled to host the White House Conference on Aging (WHCOA), Monday, July 13, 2015. Since the 1960’s, the White House has held this conference every decade to identify and advance actions to improve the quality of life of older Americans. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Medicare, Medicaid, and the older Americans Act, as well as the 80th anniversary of Social Security.
The July event continues a year-long effort to listen, learn, and share, in which the White House collects input and feedback about how to shape the aging policy landscape through a number of venues, including their website, social media, listening sessions with stakeholders and multiple regional forums.
The White House is seeking broad public engagement for this event. To participate:
STEADI Online Clinical Training
In coordination with the White House event, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is showcasing the continuing work being done to protect older adults from injury and death from falls. Every 13 seconds an older adult is treated in an Emergency Department (ED) for injuries due to a fall in the United States. Every 20 minutes, an older adult dies from one of these falls. To help prevent these occurrences, CDC created the STEADI (Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries) initiative.
Now STEADI is available online as an interactive clinical training, to give health care providers the tools needed to make fall screening, assessment, and intervention part of every clinical practice serving older adults. The content is based on established clinical guidelines and proven interventions aimed at reducing falls in older Americans, so they can stay healthy, active, and independent longer.
The training will be available on CDC TRAIN by July 13, 2015. Search the keyword “STEADI” to launch the training after creating an account, or logging into an existing account.
CDC and Older Adult Falls
CDC is working to make fall prevention a routine part of clinical care through its STEADI (Stopping Elderly Accidents Deaths & Injuries) initiative.  Falls are not an inevitable part of aging. Specific steps can be taken within the clinical setting to help safeguard older Americans so they stay healthy, active, and independent longer.
