The focus of this research is on identifying protective and risk factors that could enhance public health efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality related to heroin use and overdoses. This funding opportunity announcement outlines two separate research priorities:
  1. Investigating the patterns of prescription opioid pain reliever (OPR) use and misuse, and initiation of heroin use during and/or after OPR misuse.
  2. Investigating how and under what circumstances OPR prescribing practices (e.g., high dose) and policies aimed at curbing inappropriate prescribing are related to heroin initiation and heroin overdoses.
CDC’s Injury Center intends to commit approximately $300,000 per year for a maximum of two years to fund one application in support of Research Priority #1 and approximately $400,000 per year for a maximum of two years to fund one to two applications in support of Research Priority #2.
