Emotional Harm from Disrespect – National Patient Safety Foundation Professional Learning Series Webcast**
12 January, 2016 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm EST
Most healthcare facilities have a rigorous way to assess preventable physical harm to their patients, with strategies to identify these harms and implement corrective action plans. However, much of the harm experienced by patients is not physical, but emotional, and that this emotional harm also has significant impacts on patients.
Understanding this harm and developing a process to identify, categorize, and put in place preventive measures helps providers better serve patients and develop a culture where the patient truly comes first. In this webinar, attendees will learn how to define, identify, and categorize emotional harms to preserve patient dignity, and begin thinking about action steps to correct the sources of these emotional harms.
Key Objectives:
  • Frame emotional harm in terms of “respect” and “dignity”.
  • Describe a novel framework for emotional harms from disrespect.
  • Describe how this method is promoting patient-centered care.

TeamSTEPPS in the NICU and the Role of Leaders in the Process (January Webinar) – Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
13 January, 2016 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm EST
AHRQ is hosting a webinar on the use of TeamSTEPPS to improve quality and safety in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Shady Grove Medical Center in Maryland and the importance of leadership engagement in this effort.
This webinar will focus on the planning, implementation and sustainment of TeamSTEPPS in the NICU, as well as highlight the facilitators and barriers to implementation associated with leadership involvement and support.
Key Objectives:
  • Discuss the identification of a need for and the implementation of TeamSTEPPS in the NICU.
  • Discuss the importance of leadership (organizational and physician) involvement and buy-in in the implementation planning and execution.
  • Present results of the implementation.
  • Discuss sustainment strategies and how leadership has played a role in this aspect of the work.
