86 million American adults have prediabetes. Only 10% of them know they have it.
This month while New Year’s resolutions are still top of mind, the first-ever national prediabetes awareness campaign launched on TV, radio, print, and digital media. The campaign’s humorous approach calls attention to the very real problem of prediabetes, a serious health condition few people know about but many have.
The Ad Council collaborated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Diabetes Translation, American Diabetes Association, and American Medical Association to develop the witty, engaging campaign. The materials were designed to help people understand their risk for prediabetes so they can take steps to prevent type 2 diabetes.
Public service announcements (PSAs) were created in English and Spanish and are being distributed through thousands of TV and radio outlets, as well as print, mobile, and web channels (all run in time and space donated by the media). The PSAs encourage people to visitDoIHavePrediabetes.org to find out their prediabetes risk. The website features a short quiz, lifestyle tips, and links to prevention programs across the country that are recognized by CDC as part of the National Diabetes Prevention Program.
Ready to see for yourself? Check out the campaign YouTube channel. And be sure to look—and listen—for them on your favorite TV, radio, and digital channels.
