February is Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of early death among people with diabetes. Adults with diabetes are 2 to 4 times more likely than those without diabetes to die of heart disease or have a stroke. About 70% of people with diabetes have high blood pressure, a risk factor for heart disease. February Is Dental Health Month

Understand the link between diabetes and oral health.

Employees with diabetes are more likely to have problems with their teeth and gums.

Diabetes is associated with gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. Gum disease can lead to tooth loss. Among young adults, those with diabetes have about twice the risk of developing gum disease as those without diabetes. Adults aged 45 or older with poorly controlled diabetes (A1C >9%) are about 3x more likely to have severe gum disease than those without diabetes. People who smoke and have persistently elevated glucose levels have a 4.6 times greater risk for developing gum disease. The good news is that taking a few simple steps, including regular dental hygiene and getting dental checkups, can help keep teeth and gums healthy.
