People with Down syndrome are living longer than ever before, even reaching their 70s. Getting older can bring new health challenges, including Alzheimer’s disease. Estimates suggest that about 50 percent of people with Down syndrome will develop dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease as they age.
Scientists are working hard to understand why some people with Down syndrome develop dementia while others do not. Research ranges from basic studies about the biological causes of Alzheimer’s to clinical trials of treatments for dementia in adults with Down syndrome.
