IDF Global Advocacy newsletter - April 2016

World Health Day 2016: “Beat diabetes”

Since 1948, the World Health Day (WHD) is celebrated every 7th April to mark the founding of WHO. This year, it has focused on ways to halt the rise of diabetes worldwide with the “Beat Diabetes campaign, aiming at increasing awareness about the rise in diabetes, its staggering burden and consequences, and to trigger a set of specific, effective and affordable actions to tackle diabetes.
On occasion of WHD 2016, WHO has also launched the firstGlobal Report on Diabetes, which describes the burden and consequences of diabetes and advocate for stronger health systems. The report was released by WHO Director General, Margaret Chan, at the WHD event that took place in Geneva. Two IDF representatives acted as speakers and had an active role in the discussions: IDF President, Dr Shaukat Sadikot, and Ms Florence Banda, member of IDF Young Leaders in Diabetes programme. You can watch the event here.
World Diabetes Day 2016 theme: “Eyes on diabetes”

On the occasion of World Health Day, IDF announced that the theme of World Diabetes Day (WDD) 2016 will be ‘Eyes on diabetes’. The key messages guiding the campaign are:
  • Screening for type 2 diabetes is important to modify its course and reduce the risk of complications.
  • Screening for diabetes complications is an essential part of managing all types of diabetes.
Supporting materials for the campaign will be released from May 16 through to September in an effort to help WDD stakeholders to prepare for the day. Stay informed about the campaign atwww.worlddiabetesday.org.
IDF side event to the World Health Assembly

The 69th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) – the decision-making body of WHO - takes place in Geneva from 18 to 26 May 2016. In order to reaffirm its position as the global advocate for people with diabetes,IDF will be present at WHA and will co-organise one of the official side events taking place during the week.
The side event “The Food Revolution: accelerating national progress on tackling child obesity and child undernutrition in a sustainable way” (title to be confirmed) will be hosted by several UN Member States such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, UK and USA at the Palais des Nations on Monday 23rd May evening. The event, that will count with the participation of various Ministers of Health and chef and campaigner Jamie Oliver as speakers, will aim at creating a space to discuss current country actions to improve child nutrition and exchanging national targets and best practice experiences.
We will inform you of the event’s outcomes in the next advocacy newsletter.
IDF statement on the UK soda tax: “UK takes a step in the right direction”

On March 16, the UK Treasury Chancellor announced that a levy on soft drinks will be introduced in 2017. Pure fruit juices and milk-based products will be exempt from this tax, that will only affect big producers. The UK Treasury expects to raise £520 million a year, that will be dedicated to fund physical activity in primary schools.
IDF believes that fiscal policies (including taxation) of unhealthy food and drink products can help in preventing overweight and obesity, two main risk factors of type 2 diabetes. To welcome this very important initiative by the UK government, IDF has published a statement that you can read here.
