New Resources Offer Unique Ways to be Physically Active

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. This month we’re showcasing resources that highlight the importance of keeping healthy by being physically active. The resources offer ideas for how to meet fitness goals and promote physical activity in communities.

Step it Up! Everyone Can Help Make Our Communities More Walkable
Last year our nation’s doctor, US Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, called on Americans to Step it Up! and increase walking—by working together to improve access to safe and convenient places to walk and wheelchair roll—and to create a culture that supports walking for all Americans. These fact sheets offer strategies that different sectors can use to encourage people to walk more.
Tips for Getting Your Steps In
Finding ways to regularly fit physical activity it into your busy schedule can be a challenge. ThisCDC feature shares tips on how to incorporate more walking into your life that only require small changes to everyday activities.
Alternative Settings for Walking
Many neighborhood environment factors, such as sidewalk conditions, having good places to walk to, and perceived safety from traffic and crime influence physical activity. Fortunately, venues like malls and airports offer walk-friendly settings that remove these barriers. Check out Mall Walking: A Program Resource Guide and Promoting Airport Walking: A Guide to learn more about the benefits of encouraging walking in these settings.
