Medical Breakthroughs: First to Know

Diane Rehm Retiring

NPR is one of my favorite sources of news and Diane Rehm is one of my favorite hosts. Recently she spoke in Orlando as part of her last year on NPR and if she comes to your area, make sure to go hear her. In addition to many points she made that night, she reminded all of us that we need to pay attention to the anger in our country right now and listen with the intent of finding common ground if we truly want to preserve our American ideals. I needed this reminder…
     Watch our Medical Headline Videos:
  •      Dr Nakul Karkare, MD, orthopedic surgeon in New York City, is using specialized tools called jigs during knee replacement surgery.
  •      Dr James McDonnell, MD, director of Eye Alignment Services at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, is using surgery to permanently fix misaligned eyes in adults.
  •      Professor Daniela Nicastro, PhD, and Sandra Schmid, PhD , both at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas are using cutting edge technology to see things as small as an atom with anadvanced electron microscope.
In our first special report this week, Neurosurgeon at Florida Hospital, Evan Allen, MD, is seeing a sharp increase in younger people having strokes due to obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. On a happier note, Brian Salmon is “The Birth Guy” and he is teaching future fathers how to be dads. He is also known as the “doula dude.”

Finally, we have the full length interview with Dr Heather Gornik, MD, a vascular medicine physician at Cleveland Clinic. She tells us all about “FMD: A Mysterious Disease in Women.”
And there's more where that came from...
