2013 Cancer Report Released

The United States Cancer Statistics: 1999-2013 Incidence and Mortality Web-based Report includes the official federal statistics on cancer incidence from registries that have high-quality data, and cancer mortality statistics for each year and 2009-2013 combined. This report shows that in 2013, 1,536,119 Americans received a new diagnosis of invasive cancer, and 584,872 Americans died of this disease.

DCPC Celebrates First Anniversary of Bring Your Brave

This May, DCPC celebrated the one-year anniversary of Bring Your Brave, a campaign that harnesses powerful stories to inspire young women (under age 45) to learn about and manage their breast cancer risk. The campaign released new Take Action to Lower Your Breast Cancer Risk infographics that describe steps young women can take to manage their breast cancer risk.

U.S. Vice President Convenes National Cancer Moonshot Summit

On June 29, Vice President Joe Biden convened a National Cancer Moonshot Summit at Howard University, in Washington, D.C., as part of a national day of action that included more than 270 events in communities across the United States. More than 25 DCPC representatives attended one of two regional events in Atlanta. Dr. Lisa Richardson gave introductory remarks to a gathering of more than 200 people at the Northside Hospital event. In conjunction with the Summit, the Vice President announced set of new public and private sector actions to drive progress toward ending cancer.

Comprehensive Cancer Control Branch Representatives Attend Cancer Center Summit

Nikki Hayes and Vicki Benard recently attended the "Increasing HPV Vaccination in the U.S.: A Collaboration of NCI-Funded Cancer Centers," hosted by the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. Representatives from more than 35 cancer centers were provided a snapshot of ongoing activities to support human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination uptake, shared results and best practices, identified opportunities for cancer centers to work together on cancer control activities related to HPV vaccination, and identified research opportunities related to HPV vaccination.

Experts Discuss Lung Cancer Screening in Workshop

Dr. Greta Massetti chaired the planning committee for a workshop on June 20 and 21 in Washington, D.C. addressing the challenges of lung cancer screening. Yearly screening with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) can prevent lung cancer-related deaths by finding cancer in high-risk patients, but challenges must be addressed.

New Statistical Report Cites CDC/NPCR Data

The Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States (CBTRUS) Statistical Report: Primary Brain and Nervous System Tumors Diagnosed in the United States in 2006-2010 used data from CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR), among others, to provide a review of epidemiology of brain and central nervous system tumors in the country.
