Keeping Your Cool this Summer

No matter how high the thermometer goes, it’s going to feel even hotter for people with diabetes. That’s because if you have diabetes—either type 1 or type 2—you can get dehydrated more easily and have a harder time cooling down.
And if you’re feeling the heat, so are your diabetes medicines and equipment. Make sure to bring them with you when you’re on the go, but avoid storing them in direct sunlight or in a hot car.
Summer Smarts
Tips to stay safe and cool so you can enjoy the long summer days:
  • Drink plenty of water, even if you’re not thirsty.
  • Test your blood sugar often. High heat can change how your body uses insulin.
  • Keep medicine, supplies, and equipment out of the heat.
  • Stay inside in air-conditioning when it’s hottest.
  • Wear loose, light clothing.
  • Get medical attention for heat-related illness.
  • Make a plan in case you lose power—you and your medicine will need a cool place to go.
