A research team led by NIAID scientists has delineated how HIV persists in immune cells of HIV-infected people who can control the virus naturally, without drugs. HIV uses three major mechanisms, each within a defined anatomic and functional part of the immune system, in these individuals’ helper T cells. Virus replication occurs in lymph nodes; small numbers of recently infected cells circulate in the blood; and old viruses persist within blood cells whose numbers are maintained by cell division. The findings suggest that HIV cure strategies for all people living with the virus will need to target these three mechanisms of HIV persistence.
