Improving Patient Safety Culture to Provide Safer Care – Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)

AHRQ is hosting a webinar on efforts to address safety culture to improve the quality of care and reduce patient harm. The webinar, “Improving Patient Safety Culture to Provide Safer Care,” will feature Adam Novak, Project Coordinator at Michigan Hospital Association (MHA) Keystone Center. His presentation will focus on MHA’s work to improve patient safety culture across its hospitals, including the use of TeamSTEPPS® and teamwork interventions. He will discuss specific interventions, such as the implementation of the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program (CUSP), specific teamwork tools, and efforts to improve staff psychological safety. He will also discuss the importance of strategies focused on small tests of change, as well as MHA’s work to assess the impact of interventions. Specifically, the presentation will seek to:- Provide an overview of MHA’s overall program of work to improve patient safety culture;
- Discuss the role of TeamSTEPPS and other teamwork interventions within the CUSP framework;
- Describe specific implementation efforts focused on improving teamwork, communication, and safety culture;
- Discuss the importance of the engagement of both leaders and front-line staff in this work; and
- Present MHA’s efforts to assess intervention effectiveness.
