Simple Method for Direct Quantification of Brominated Vegetable Oil in Soft Drinks
NCTR scientists have developed a simple and rapid method to directly quantify brominated vegetable oil (BVO) - a food additive - in soft drinks. The method is both precise and accurate while requiring only a “dilute and shoot” sample preparation process. Employing liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, the method was validated in the range of 5-25 µg/ml BVO, which encompasses the legal limit of 15 µg/mL set by FDA for beverages on the US market. BVO is used in certain fruit-flavored beverages, and was placed on FDA’s interim list of food additives that require further toxicological evaluation. A manuscript describing the study is available online at Food Chemistrydisclaimer icon.
