CDC’s Division of Reproductive Health and the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control worked together with the International Association of Indigenous Aging on 1,000 Grandmothers, a project that created opportunities for tribal elders (especially grandmothers) to mentor and educate young Native parents on safe sleep practices for infants. In recent months, 1,000 Grandmothers has been recognized in several locations for its success.
  • 1,000 Grandmothers is featured as an innovative project to address sudden unexpected infant death on the Healthy People 2020 Who’s Leading the Health Indicators website. It’s the first Native program to earn national recognition for Healthy People 2020.

  • The International Association for Indigenous Aging was invited to present project findings and share the curriculum with U.S. Administration for Community Living-funded Native elder agencies. Recently, they have also presented at the Indian Health Services (IHS) conference where copies of the curriculum were distributed to all IHS Injury Prevention Directors.
