How to plan for end-of-life care decisions

e-Update from the National Institute on Aging

No one likes to think about death, but making decisions while you are healthy can help those close to you when the time comes. Having an outline of your wishes may give your caregivers comfort during a difficult time.
There are several ways to make sure others understand the kind of care you want at the end of life:
  • Talk about end-of-life wishes—discuss your thoughts, values, and desires about end-of-life care with family and friends before becoming sick.
  • Prepare advance directives—write up formal instructions in documents like a living will and a healthcare power of attorney. Make sure these documents are in a place that is easy to find, and that family members know where they are.
