NIH - Fogarty International Center - Advancing Science for Global Health

Because diseases know no borders, researchers world-wide must work together to stop epidemics early and close to the source. Programs supported by Fogarty work to develop scientific capacity, provide training in countries with little or no infrastructure, and link trainees to a global network of experts. The training provided to health care workers, doctors and researchers requires a relatively modest investment, but could provide the tools countries need to halt disease outbreaks in their tracks, possibly preventing the need for large-scale emergency efforts like the ones assembled to fight the Ebola and Zika virus outbreaks.
In addition to Fogarty's training and capacity building efforts to support preparedness, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) leads NIH efforts on research related to biodefense and emerging infectious diseases and pathogens.
