In meditation, a person learns to focus attention. Most meditative techniques started in Eastern religious or spiritual traditions, but today, many people use meditation outside of its traditional religious or cultural settings. According to a large national survey, 8 percent of U.S. adults (18 million) have used meditation. But, is this integrative approach effective and safe?

Studies show that meditation may help at least somewhat with:
  • High blood pressure
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Insomnia
  • Chronic low-back pain.
It is uncertain, however, if meditation can help with other forms of pain or help you quit smoking.

Meditation is generally considered to be safe for healthy people but always ask about the training and experience of the instructor you’re considering. Also, there are rare reports of meditation causing or worsening symptoms of certain psychiatric problems like anxiety and depression. If you have a mental health condition or other health condition, talk with your doctor before trying meditation, and make your meditation instructor aware of your condition.
