CDC’s Division of Global HIV & TB Celebrates 5 Years of Partnership at ASLM 2016
CDC attended the 2016 African Society for Laboratory Medicine Conference (ASLM), held December 3-8 in Cape Town, South Africa. We were honored to join the world’s top scientific researchers at the ASLM 2016 conference in addressing current global health threats and the contribution laboratories can make in accelerating the development of solutions. During this seven day conference, CDC leadership joined top scientists, innovators and decision makers in presenting their latest scientific breakthroughs, strengthen collaboration between public health leaders and specialists locally and internationally and work toward the common goal of combatting the world’s greatest health threats. This year’s conference theme was “Combatting Common Global Health Threats Together.” CDC, in collaboration with global partners, was instrumental in helping to establish the first-of-its-kind African Society of Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) five years ago. Since then, we’ve worked together to strengthen lab workforces, improve testing quality and regulatory systems and build a strong network across the continent to help with early disease detection and research.
CDC researchers produced 70 abstracts that were presented at ASLM 2016 by way of symposiums, oral abstract sessions and poster presentations. Throughout the event, CDC highlighted our best-in-class laboratory expertise, pioneering work to create laboratory partnerships with the private sector, and scientific innovations in HIV diagnostic testing, viral load monitoring and work to strengthen the links between diagnostics and care. During the conference, Dr. Shannon Hader, CDC’s Division Director of Global HIV & TB, spoke about strengthening the interface between diagnostics and care through the scale up of HIV viral load. Dr. John Nkengasong, Acting Principal Deputy Director for the Office of the Director, gave a keynote address on CDC’s work to strengthen laboratory accreditation programs.
