Veterans Are in Pain, According to Analysis of National Health Survey

American veterans experience higher prevalence of pain and more severe pain than nonveterans, with young and middle-aged veterans suffering the most, according to a new analysis of data from the 2010-2014 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). This survey provides the first national estimate of severe pain associated with painful health conditions in veterans and nonveterans and underscores the importance of sustaining efforts to monitor and manage pain among veterans.

BRAIN Initiative Researchers Meet to Share Progress

NIH will host a meeting on December 12-14, 2016 of nearly a thousand people who are part of the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies® (BRAIN) Initiative, a large-scale public and private effort to develop new tools and technologies to understand the healthy and diseased brain. Researchers will discuss scientific developments–many which have occurred since the BRAIN Initiative was launched in 2013–promising new directions for research as well as identifying areas for future collaborations.

Major General James Gilman, M.D., Tapped to Lead NIH Clinical Center

NIH recently announced the selection of Major General James K. Gilman, M.D., U.S. Army (Retired), as the inaugural chief executive officer of the NIH Clinical Center.  Dr. Gilman is expected to join the NIH in early January 2017.
