The National Resource Directory, a website that provides access to services and resources at the national, state and local levels, unveiled an updated design and layout this week. The updates were implemented to make the site more user- friendly for the thousands of service members, veterans and family members who use the Directory each month.

“The National Resource Directory has been an invaluable collection of resources for our service members, veterans and their families,” said James Rodriguez, deputy assistant secretary of defense, Office of Warrior Care Policy. “Improving the site and expanding its capabilities was an easy decision.”

Enhancements to the Directory include a refreshed appearance, updated search engine, and behind the scenes software updates that will improve the speed and accuracy of managing the programs and services listed.

Red Cross Launches Hero Care App

The American Red Cross unveiled the new Hero Care mobile app, which is designed to help members of the military, veterans and their families identify and access both emergency and non-emergency Red Cross services from anywhere in the world. The app enables users to achieve the following:

• Request Red Cross emergency services including an emergency message or assistance with emergency travel or emergency financial aid.
• Securely access information about their service member in the case of an emergency, including updated information as they move or change duty assignments.
• Access non-emergency Red Cross behavioral health assistance including financial assistance and free local workshops for military kids and spouses.
• Find resources and information provided by trusted community partners like Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), Blue Star Families, Military Child Education Coalition, United Way, Goodwill, Easter Seals, and others.

Request Your Military Service Records like the DD 214 through the National Archives

A frequent inquiry is finding where a service member can gain access to their Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, commonly referred to as the "DD 214".

The Report of Separation is important because it contains information normally needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans' organizations. Information shown on the Report of Separation may include the service member's date and place of entry into active duty.

The DD 214 form can be found at the National Archives using their online eVetRecs system, which creates a customized order form to request information from your, or your relative's, military personnel records.
