Top Story: DCPC Sends Delegation to Cancer Registrars’ Association Meeting

Lisa Richardson, MD, MPH and Fran Babcock, BS, MT, CTR, along with several members of DCPC’s Cancer Surveillance Branch, attended the National Cancer Registrars’ Association (NCRA) 43rd Annual Educational Conference from April 5-8 in Washington, D.C. Dr. Richardson opened the meeting along with Dr. Lynne Penberthy of the National Cancer Institute with an address: “National Priorities: Data Collection in Today’s Environment.” There were sessions for Education and Training Coordinators (ETCs). Highlights of the meeting included a walk on Capitol Hill for NCRA members visiting their local elected officials to share the importance of the cancer registry in their state and an award recognition for the National Program of Cancer Registries for its 25 years of service.

Sue Sabatino Wins Arthur S. Flemming Award

Susan Sabatino, MD, of the Epidemiology and Applied Research Branch, won an Arthur S. Flemming award in the category of Social Science, Clinical Trials, and Translational Research. The award honors outstanding federal employees; past award winners include Neil Armstrong and Daniel Patrick Moynihan. She will accept the award at a gala at the George Washington University’s campus on May 24^th.

Supplement on Colorectal Cancer Screening Costs Published

Florence Tangka, PhD, led a special issue of the journal Evaluation and Program Planning along with numerous other DCPC authors. The series of articles looked at costs of creating and implementing a colorectal cancer screening program. Listen to Dr. Tangka describe the articles in a podcast.

CDC Offers Free Continuing Education Webinar for Oncology Providers

There will be a free webinar on Tuesday, April 18 on reducing infection among cancer patients. The discussion draws lessons from a fungal outbreak, reviews oversight of safety standards, and provides resources for clinics to follow infection control and prevention practices.

Paper on Radon and Comprehensive Cancer Control Plans Published

Mary Puckett, PhD and Tony Neri, MPH, MD co-wrote a paper entitled, “Evaluating Progress in Radon Control Activities for Lung Cancer Prevention in National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program Plans, 2011–2015,” published in the Journal of Community Health. The paper focuses on addressing radon in cancer control plans and how this can be expanded.

DCPC Authors Contribute to Research Letter on Indoor Tanning Initiation

Meg Watson, MPH and Meredith Shoemaker, MPH led a research letter in JAMA Dermatology, entitled, “Indoor tanning initiation among tanners in the United States.” It focuses on when people began tanning indoors and what factors affect when and why they began indoor tanning.
