This week, as part of our series in recognition of National Arthritis Awareness Month, we’re taking a look at tai chi. If you have osteoarthritis of the knee, joining a tai chi class might be helpful for you. Tai chi combines certain postures and gentle, dance-like body movements with mental focus, breathing, and relaxation. You can think of it as meditation in motion. Several research studies have shown that people with knee osteoarthritis who do tai chi may have short-term improvements in pain, stiffness, and physical function. In one of these studies, tai chi was as helpful as physical therapy.
