Review: NIAID Experts Detail Barriers to HIV Remission in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

HIV researchers are seeking treatment strategies that achieve sustained viral remission, which would allow recipients to maintain undetectable viral loads without regular antiretroviral treatment. While this strategy has the potential to save resources in low- and middle-income countries, most research in this area has occurred in high income countries. In a new review, experts from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of NIH, and their international colleagues explore barriers and other considerations for implementing research towards sustained viral remission in low- and middle-income countries, where they are most urgently needed, in order to achieve goals laid out in the 2017 NIAID strategic plan.
