If you have type 2 diabetes, you aren’t alone—millions of other people do as well. Fortunately, conventional medical treatments and following a healthy lifestyle, including watching your weight, can help you prevent, manage, and control many complications of diabetes. However, some people also try complementary health approaches, including dietary supplements.

Researchers have studied a variety of dietary supplements for diabetes, including alpha-lipoic acid, chromium, magnesium, omega-3s, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Overall, there isn’t enough scientific evidence to show that any dietary supplement is helpful for managing or preventing type 2 diabetes. In addition, there are multiple case reports linking dietary supplement use to kidney disease. This is of particular concern for people with diabetes because diabetes is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure in the United States.
