SAMHSA announces $6 million in grants to support the International President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Addiction Technology Transfer Centers

Wednesday, August 2, 2017
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has awarded up to $6 million in funding over the next five years to support the International President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Addiction Technology Transfer Centers (INT PEPFAR-ATTC) programs operating in Vietnam, South Africa and Ukraine.
The purpose of this program is to establish INT PEPFAR-ATTC programs in Vietnam, South Africa and Ukraine that increase the capacity, skills and abilities of their HIV/AIDS programs Governmental agencies and the PEPFAR programs will address problematic substance use—including opioid-related disorders—and mental disorders to impact the goals of the national HIV prevention, care and treatment programs.
Three U.S. universities will use this grant funding to address substance use and HIV/AIDS by providing training, technical assistance, knowledge transfer and workforce development. The participating universities and countries are the University of California Los Angeles (Vietnam), Brown University (South Africa), and the University of California San Diego (Ukraine).
PEPFAR is the U.S. Government’s initiative to deliver life-saving services and improve the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS around the world. HIV infection rates can overlap with substance use and mental disorders, making treatment and prevention of each condition more complicated. Through funding the INT PEPFAR-ATTC program, SAMHSA helps spread expertise in the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS and behavioral health disorders.
